An Enquiry Concerning Human Understanding

Hume's first and boldest book, complete in its three parts: the understanding, the passions and morals. Here he argues that our ideas come from impressions and that causation rests on habit, not reason.

David Hume

The book Hume thought was his best. He traces morality to human feeling and usefulness, and shows why benevolence and justice earn our approval.

David Hume

Hume's own short summary of the Treatise, published anonymously in 1740 to win readers. It sets out his argument on cause and effect in a few clear pages.
