The Phantom of the Opera and Other Fantastic Novels
The Phantom of the Opera came out as a serial in 1910 and became a legend after the 1925 Lon Chaney film and the Andrew Lloyd Webber musical. Leroux returned to the fantastic again and again, with reincarnation, Inca sacrifice and a painter who steals a wife's heart in her dreams.
A masked genius lives in the cellars of the Paris Opera and coaches a young soprano from behind the walls. The 1910 novel behind the Lon Chaney film and the musical, darker and stranger than both.
A quiet Paris rope merchant discovers he is the reincarnation of Cartouche, the famous 18th-century bandit, and starts hunting for the treasure he buried two centuries ago. A comic fantastic novel in Edgar Jepson's 1912 translation, with the original illustrations.
A husband becomes convinced that a famous painter is stealing his young wife's heart in her dreams, and sets out to find out how before he loses her. Leroux's Le Coeur cambriole, published in English in 1926, also known as The Burgled Heart.
In Lima, a young woman takes a golden sun bracelet that marks her as a bride of the Inca sun god, and the last followers of the old cult come to claim her for their sacrifice. Adventure and the fantastic in the Andes, from 1915.
Joseph Rouletabille is an 18-year-old reporter who solves crimes the police can't, starting with the locked-room puzzle of The Mystery of the Yellow Room. Leroux wrote it to beat Edgar Allan Poe at his own game, and The Perfume of the Lady in Black picks up right where it ends.
A young woman is attacked in a room locked from the inside, and the attacker vanishes without a trace. Eighteen-year-old reporter Joseph Rouletabille takes on the police in one of the greatest locked-room mysteries ever written.
Rouletabille's old enemy Larsan comes back on the eve of a wedding, and the reporter follows him to a fortress on the Riviera where he finally learns the secret of his own mother. The direct sequel to The Mystery of the Yellow Room.
Rouletabille travels to Saint Petersburg to protect a Russian general from the revolutionaries who keep trying to kill him, and the danger seems to come from inside the house. The third Rouletabille novel, known in French as Rouletabille chez le Tsar.
This time Rouletabille is the suspect: a woman is murdered, everything points to him, and he has to clear his own name from a prison cell. The US edition of Le Crime de Rouletabille, published in England as The Slave Bangle.
Chéri-Bibi is a convict sentenced for a murder he didn't commit, and these four novels follow his escapes, disguises and revenge. The Floating Prison opens the saga, and in the US it was published as Wolves of the Sea.
Chéri-Bibi, convicted of a murder he never committed, sails for the penal colony on a convict ship and leads a revolt to reach the woman he has always loved. The first Chéri-Bibi novel, published in the US as Wolves of the Sea.
Chéri-Bibi returns to France with a new face and a new name, determined to stay close to Cecily without her ever knowing. Further adventures of Leroux's convict hero, ending on the cliffhanger The Dancing Girl picks up.
Picks up right where The Dark Road stops: the police are in the house, Chéri-Bibi is hiding under a sofa, and Françoise has to lie to save him. The Chéri-Bibi saga reaches its showdown.
Paris is on the edge of a second revolution, and Chéri-Bibi gets caught up in a coup, a prison and a last tumbril ride. The last Chéri-Bibi adventure, translated in 1928.
These novels sit outside Leroux's two series, with a secret submarine war, a plot that ends at Mayerling and an actress crowned queen in the Brazilian jungle. Few readers know them today, which makes them a real find for fans of the Phantom.
Herbert of Renich, a neutral caught in the middle of the First World War, gets pulled into a German admiral's household and a secret submarine war. The sequel to The Amazing Adventures of Carolus Herbert.
A mysterious nobleman, a gipsy girl and a plot that runs from the Palais Royal in Paris to the Hofburg in Vienna and the tragedy of Mayerling. Court intrigue and adventure, translated in 1930.
Irene de Troie, a star of the Comédie Française, tours South America and ends up crowned queen of a tribe deep in the Brazilian jungle. A light, comic adventure novel that shows a very different Leroux.
Gaston Leroux died in Nice in 1927, but his reporter-detective and his Opera ghost are still everywhere, from films to musicals. Reading his other books shows how much more he had to offer.
